Currently, at the four departments of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, by September 1, 2015), the preparation of bachelors (the term of training 4 years) is organized in the following specialties: *mathematics* – with the award of the qualification “Bachelor of Mathematics”; *Applied Mathematics* – with the qualification “Bachelor of Applied Mathematics”; *Computer Science and Information Technologies* – with the qualification “Bachelor of Computer Science and Information Technologies”.

From 2015/2016 academic year, it is planned to start bachelor’s studies in the field of “software engineering”. On the basis of preparation of bachelors the preparation of masters (the term of training 2 years) or specialists (the term of studying 1 year) in the following specialties: 1) Mathematics – with the qualification “master (specialist) in mathematics, teacher of mathematics and computer science”; 3) Applied Mathematics – with the qualification “Master (Specialist) in Applied Mathematics”; 4) Computer Science and Information Technology – with the qualification “Master (Specialist) in Computer Science and Information Technologies”.

Training is carried out both on a state-commissioned basis and on a contractual basis. Today, more than 400 students (including 10 foreign citizens) and 10 full-time and part-time postgraduate students study at the faculty. The high level of training of graduates is promoted by the scientific cooperation of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics with scientists of universities and research institutes of Ukraine, as well as countries of near and far abroad.

The creative, highly professional atmosphere at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics attracted and attracted gifted, talented youth. Currently, the faculty trains 5 winners of international school Olympiads in mathematics and 10 winners of the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in Mathematics for schoolchildren.

**History**

The glorious history of the faculty, the development of mathematics and mechanics, the fundamental training of students dates back to the opening of the University in 1804, when the departments of pure mathematics and applied mathematics were established in the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. On the faculty traditions of selfless work and love for mathematics were formed. These traditions were laid by the first professor of mathematics at the Kharkov University – TF Osipovsky (1765-1832), who worked at the University from 1803 to 1822 and was the rector of the University in 1813-1820. Among the first students of the university was an outstanding mathematician, academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences MV Ostrogradsky (1801-1862). Later mathematical traditions were supported and developed by the efforts of such prominent scholars as V.G.Imshenetsky (1832-1892), K.M. Andreev (1848-1921), AM Lyapunov (1857-1918), V. A. .. Steklov (1864-1926), D. M. Sintsov (1867-1946), S. N. Bernshtein (1880-1968).

The Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics was formed organizationally in 1961. The first dean became prof. D. S. Gordevsky (1901-1979). Since September 1, 2015 the faculty has a new name – “Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics”.

Today, 60 teaching staff, including two correspondent members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 20 doctors and 35 candidates of science, provide scientific research, educational process, methodological and organizational work of the faculty. There are 4 departments at the faculty.

At the Department of * Theoretical and Applied Informatics* (headed by Associate Professor I.T.Zaretskaya): mathematical and computer modeling and its application in the development of software and research of information and communication, natural and socio-economic systems, mathematical logic, the theory of computationality and their Application to the theory of programming and formal verification of the software; Soft computing and their application in mathematical statistics and software engineering; Quantum informatics The department actively cooperates with software development companies such as EPAM, NixSolution, Sigma Sofware, Cloud Works and others.

The new interdisciplinary program of the faculty is the training of specialists in biostatistics at the request and support of the companies Intego Group (USA), Expiriece (USA) and the leading international pharmaceutical corporation Roche Holding AG. This program opens for graduates of the faculty new opportunities in applying their mathematical and programming skills to support the development of new pharmaceutical products.

The faculty maintains scientific contacts with many higher educational institutions and research institutions of Ukraine, Russia, the CIS, as well as the USA, France, Germany, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Israel, Spain, Italy, Canada, China, Mexico , Turkey and other countries.

The Student Scientific Society successfully works at the faculty. Students from junior courses have the opportunity to engage in research work, participate in scientific conferences and publish their scientific works.

Students of all specialties receive basic mathematical education during the first two years of study with further in-depth training depending on the chosen specialty, specialization and their own interests.

* Applied mathematics* builds models of physical, technical and financial-economic systems that use modern software to solve numerical simulation problems, computer geometry, system and process control. Learn to create extensions and add-ons for engineering computer graphics systems, office and specialized mathematical packages. They are engaged in the simulation of the movement of fluid, gas and plasma, which is associated with the tasks of modern technology, materials science, ecology, nanotechnology and biotechnology, aerospace and biomedical applications. Master modern software packages for computer simulation of complex processes. Studying biomechanics, which is widely used in medicine, sports and biomedical engineering.

* Informatics,* that is, future specialists in computer science and information technologies, study in accordance with the international standard of training specialists COMPUTING CURRICULA 2005 to develop software for both local and distributed platforms to protect information. At the end of the 4th year, students defend their qualifications for a bachelor’s degree. Admission to the magistracy is based on the results of the competition, which takes into account the results of training for the previous 4 years and the results of entrance examinations. Graduates from all faculties of any higher educational institution can join the magistracy. Departments, which prepare masters in the corresponding specialty, provide teaching of special courses and execution of diploma works throughout the term of study.

The Faculty has a Double Degree Program in Computer Science and Information Technology with the University of Nice – Sofia Antipolis (France), which allows students to study abroad during the last year of their master’s studies, take internships at one of the well-known international research centers in the region. Informatics and Automation INRIA (France) and receive, in addition to the Master’s Degree in our University, a Master’s Degree in French University. This program is supported by the Ukrainian and French Governments, as well as by the European program ERASMUS +.
